A dental crown is basically a false tooth made of porcelain. It’s designed to cover up and protect your tooth, and it replaces it all the way down to the gum line. This is why dental crowns are also called “caps,” because they completely cap and cover your tooth.
Crowns are the best way to restore teeth that have been damaged by oral trauma or extensive tooth decay, and they are also used to protect teeth after root canal therapy. Crowns are also sometimes used for cosmetic purposes if a tooth is severely stained or is otherwise unsuitable for treatment with a veneer or a similar cosmetic dentistry treatment.
As the name implies, a dental bridge is a prosthetic that “bridges” the gap where one or more missing teeth used to be. Bridges are closely related to crowns because they use two crowns to attach to two healthy “abutment teeth,” on either side of your missing tooth or teeth.
These crowns are permanently bonded to the teeth, and between them, one or more false teeth are suspended to fill up the gaps in your smile and replace your missing teeth. Crowns are usually used to replace up to 1-2 missing teeth in a row.
The process of getting crowns and bridges is actually quite similar. Both treatments begin with Dr. Winslow cleaning and numbing your mouth, then removing enamel from the teeth that are going to be receiving dental crowns.
Each tooth must be trimmed down to remove up to 70-80% of the natural structure. This provides the crown or bridge with a stable platform, and ensures that it fits properly in with your other teeth.
Once your teeth have been trimmed, Dr. Winslow will take impressions of your mouth. These will be sent to a dental lab where your bridge or crown will be made. In the meantime, he will attach a temporary crown or bridge to your teeth to cover them up and protect them.
It will take about 2-3 weeks to build your crown or bridge. Once it arrives at our office, you’ll come back to , and your temporary crown or bridge will be removed. Then, your permanent crown or bridge will be bonded into place with dental cement, completing your procedure.
The crown or bridge placement process is non-invasive, and only involves the removal of some of your natural enamel. There is no surgery involved, so there is no lengthy recovery period. Your teeth may feel a little bit sensitive after they have been trimmed and prepared, but this will go away after your permanent bridge or crown is placed at your final consultation. Don't hesitate to stop by our office located at 1900 W Whittier Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640 if you have concerns after your brown or bridge placement.
