Sometimes tooth extractions are the best option for preventing further complications and relieving tooth pain and discomfort
Tooth extractions may be required for extremely damaged or decayed teeth that cannot be treated using other methods
We offer basic tooth extractions as well as wisdom tooth extractions at our office in Montebello. We also proudly serve Pico Rivera and Whittier.
With numbing and sedation, you’ll feel comfortable and safe throughout your entire appointment
Most commonly, a tooth extraction is required when your wisdom teeth begin to come in. The wisdom teeth are the third set of molars. Unlike the rest of your teeth, which usually come in by the age of 13, the wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 17-25.
Because they come in so late, the wisdom teeth can cause problems for your other teeth. This is particularly true in patients who have had orthodontic treatment. Often, there is not enough room for them to erupt properly. They may fail to erupt completely (impacted wisdom teeth), or even grow in sideways. If your wisdom teeth are not erupting properly, it’s usually a good idea to have them extracted to avoid further complications.
Tooth extractions are also sometimes required if a tooth is extremely damaged or unhealthy. For example, severe tooth decay or gum disease can require the extraction of one or more teeth. Serious oral trauma, like a slip and fall or car accident, can also damage a tooth to such an extent that extraction may be necessary.
The process of a basic extraction is simple. First, the area will be cleaned and numbed. Then, Dr. Winslow will use a tool called a dental elevator and loosen the tooth in the socket until it is easy to simply remove the tooth by its root.
After the tooth has been extracted, Dr. Winslow will clean, sanitize and disinfect the area. The now-empty socket will be sutured shut to encourage proper healing. Dr. Winslow will send you home with after-care instructions which you should follow diligently. Don't hesitate to stop by our office located at 1900 W Whittier Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640 if you have any concerns after treatment.
It will take about a week to heal from your tooth extraction and resume a normal diet. Most patients are completely recovered within 2 weeks. Dr. Winslow will provide you with a comprehensive set of aftercare and recovery instructions. It’s important to follow them to the letter to ensure that you do not suffer from any complications after your tooth is removed.
One of the most common complications is called dry socket. Doing things like using a straw or spitting vigorously can dislodge the blood clot in your socket. This blood clot serves as the scaffolding, around which your mouth will heal. If it’s dislodged, it can cause a lot of pain and interfere with the healing process. Make sure to follow Dr. Winslow’s instructions to avoid this complication and ensure that your mouth heals properly.
The process of extracting your tooth will not hurt at all. Your mouth will be totally numb, and we also offer sedation options at your dentist in Montebello to keep you feeling safe and comfortable. You may feel some pressure while Dr. Winslow works on your mouth, but you won’t feel any pain.
Some discomfort is to be expected once numbing and sedation wear off. This is normal. Make sure to follow Dr. Winslow’s recovery instructions to deal with this pain and discomfort and ensure your mouth heals properly.
