Save the piece, call us, and we’ll take it from there

A piece of your tooth just broke off

An olive pit, an elbow during a pickup game, an old filling that finally gave way. A chipped or broken tooth is any loss of tooth structure, from a corner of enamel to a fracture into the nerve, and the repair depends on how deep it goes.

For chipped tooth repair, Montebello patients can often be seen the same day, and the first step is a call. Reach out to us at (323) 721-7153.

What to do in the next hour

  • Rinse: swish warm water to clear debris.
  • Save the piece: keep the fragment moist in milk or saliva; it can sometimes be bonded back on.
  • Cold compress: ice in a cloth against the cheek eases swelling.
  • Chew on the other side: soft food only until we have looked.
  • Call us: tell us what happened and if it hurts.

Is a chipped tooth an emergency?

A chipped tooth is an emergency when it hurts, bleeds, or exposes the inside of the tooth; a small, painless chip can usually wait a few days.

Call the same day if:

  • It hurts or throbs: especially with hot, cold, or pressure, which suggests the nerve is involved.
  • You see pink or red inside the break: that is the pulp, and it needs protection quickly.
  • A large piece is gone or the tooth is loose: what is left can split with one wrong bite.

How we fix it, by how deep the break goes

Small chip: composite bonding

We sculpt tooth-colored composite onto the tooth and harden it in place. One visit, no lab, and the tooth keeps its own structure. On a front tooth where the chip changes your smile more than your bite, a porcelain veneer is the other option, previewed digitally first.

Larger break or cracked tooth: same-day crown or onlay

When a chunk of the tooth is gone or a crack runs through it, the tooth needs covering so it cannot split. We scan it and mill a ceramic or zirconia crown, or an onlay, in our office while you wait.

Break into the nerve: root canal, then a crown

If the fracture exposes the pulp or the tooth is already aching, a root canal removes the nerve and seals the tooth before it is crowned.

Broken to the root: extraction and an implant

A tooth fractured below the gumline usually cannot be saved. We remove it and plan a dental implant from a 3D scan once the site is healthy.

Need to be seen today?

We hold time for same-day visits when possible during office hours and treat first-time patients in an emergency. There is no after-hours line; if a tooth breaks at night, call when we open.

How much does it cost to fix a chipped tooth?

Bonding costs least, a crown more, and a root canal or implant adds to that; for chipped tooth repair Montebello patients receive a written estimate after the exam. We accept all PPO plans, offer the Kleer membership plan if you have no insurance, and Cherry and Sunbit financing split larger repairs into monthly payments.

Why doesn’t my chipped tooth hurt?

Enamel has no nerve supply, so a chip that stops there feels like a rough edge. Pain means the break reached dentin or the pulp.

Can a chipped tooth wait?

A small, painless chip can. A painful or deep break should not; the longer the pulp is exposed, the more likely it is to become infected.

Will insurance cover the repair?

Usually, for the restorative part. PPO plans commonly contribute toward fillings, crowns, root canals, and extractions; purely cosmetic bonding is often excluded.

How long does bonding last?

Typically several years, and it is easy to polish or redo. Bonding chips and stains more readily than porcelain, so avoid biting ice or fingernails on that edge.
